ARTIST BIO

Fiona Heysen, a grand-daughter of Sir Hans Heysen, has been drawing and painting  for over 35 years.

She  likes to use a lightly ’impressionist’ style to try to capture light with colour, especially with her little paintings of chooks, but believes that the ability to draw  is still the most essential aspect of her work.

She has also illustrated many of Nan Witcomb’s “The Thoughts of Nanushka” books, as well as equine texts for TAFE.

Since starting a family, she has turned  to doing commission portraits, including entries in the Archibald Portrait prize, as well as many beloved pets and of course, horses. Mainly working in pastels and charcoal but also in oils, her works have always caught the essence and character of her subjects.

She has been passionate about horses all her life and is a highly experienced horsewoman having ridden her home bred and broken-in horse ’SirHans’ to Grand Prix level dressage. She is a highly credentialled Dressage judge and also an accredited Equestrian Coach and loves to teach and share her knowledge.
