Louise Vadasz is a South Australian artist currently focussing on portraits and landscapes working in heavy oil impasto, using bright colours.
Her landscape paintings feature scenes from the vineyards and rolling hills of McLaren Vale, where she was born and the coastal region of Willunga, south of Adelaide. Her strong, textured work express Louise’s love of the Southern Vales, and the nearby coastal region.
After travelling widely Louise was inspired to retrace the areas previously painted by South
Australian artists Horace Trenery and Ivor Hele, but familiar to her from a childhood spent at “Greenacres.” This rambling homestead is better known as the home of South Australia’s first studio potter Gladys Reynell, who was a student of the renowned artist, Margaret Preston.
Like Reynell Louise is captivated by the colours and textures of the South Australian landscape. She is now imposing her own style to capture an environment that is ancient but subject to changes brought about by farming and development.
The portraits Louise paints are noted for their ability to capture each subject’s character with an intimacy that contrasts with the bold and distinctive colour palette she favours. Her successful South
Australian Living Artist 2010 exhibition at Cibo Café, lead to a number of private commissions and further development of her unique approach.
Louise turned to painting in oil, after a number of years running “Wish,” a café and gallery in central Adelaide, and concentrating on the production of publicly and privately commissioned mosaic works. The most notable of the public mosaic works are scattered around Rundle and Gouger Street.
Privately commissioned work includes Peter Goers bathroom.
As a graduate of the South Australian School of Art, where her maternal grandfather Allan Sierp was the Principal from 1961-70, Louise approaches her work with a sense of artistic heritage and a traditional training in the disciplines of printmaking, drawing, photography and design.
From 2009 -2011 Louise coordinated “Backroom Studio” and “Arispace” an artist run gallery for emerging artists in North Adelaide, where she successfully exhibited a growing body of work.
She is now working in her own studio, producing a range of portraits and landscapes for exhibition. |
