I have my Mum to thank for introducing me to this wonderful form of expression. She had a true love for painting and wanted to share that with me. I was given a paintbrush and oil paints at the age of twelve. What Mum really gave me was the freedom to dream, escape and create. A gift I will pass on to my children and whoever stops for a moment to take in one of my creations.
As a child I could spend hours drawing my favourite comic characters. As a teenager my focus fell on the expressions and contours of a person’s face. I found portraiture challenging and extremely rewarding once a likeness was achieved. I enjoyed working with charcoal as I was able to obtain a realistic finish with my subjects.
By the time I reached adulthood drawing and designing clothing was my passion and full time job. My clothing line ‘Eleven Terrace’ was selling in eleven boutiques and stores throughout Adelaide. My brand was marketed in the local newspaper, a morning television program and in local fashion magazines. I relished in this exciting time of my life. Seeing something I had created, being worn on the streets was the most amazing sensation.
Now, with three little children to care for and a designing, dressmaking business to run, my scarce spare time is spent in front of a canvas. The only time you will meet Leah, (not Mum, wife or proprietor) is when I have a paint brush in my hand. |
